What to Wear to a Party, From Dinner to a Night Out
'Party' covers everything from six people around a table to a room where you will not sit down once. These are different problems.
Dinner party at someone's home
The most over-dressed occasion in the calendar. You are sitting for three hours in a room the host controls the temperature of. Dressed-up denim or good trousers, a top with some texture, and a layer you can remove. Aim one step above what you would wear to dinner out, and no further — turning up in cocktail wear to a friend's kitchen makes everyone else feel underdressed, which is the actual failure mode.
Drinks or a bar
Standing, warm, loud, and probably longer than planned. Dark bottoms hide the inevitable, a top with texture reads well in bad lighting, and footwear you can stand in for four hours is not optional. Texture matters more than colour here, because most bars are too dim for colour to register at all — ribbed knit, satin, suede and velvet all read in low light where a flat cotton does not.
A night out where you will be dancing
The only occasion on this list where practicality genuinely outranks polish. Something that moves, something you are not adjusting, and shoes you have already tested. Shine and texture do the work that structure does elsewhere. If you are going to think about a single garment even once after the first hour, wear something else.
A big formal event
Here the invitation tells you the code and you follow it — this is the one context where the rules are external rather than yours to set. The variable worth controlling is comfort: a formal outfit you can breathe, sit and eat in will carry you through a five-hour event that a beautifully fitted one you cannot will not.
What works across all four
- One point of shine or texture, not several competing.
- Shoes you have worn before, for the length of time you will actually be standing.
- A layer for the walk home that does not ruin the outfit while you are carrying it.
- Pockets, or a bag small enough that you will not put it down and lose it.

One step above what you would wear to a restaurant, and no more. The failure mode is arriving so dressed up that the other guests feel underdressed in their friend's kitchen.
What should I wear to a party if I do not know the dress code?
Ask the host — it is a normal question and takes ten seconds. Failing that, dark trousers or denim with a textured top works at almost every party that is not explicitly formal.
Why does texture matter more than colour at night?
Most party lighting is too dim for colour to read accurately. Texture catches what light there is, which is why satin, velvet, suede and ribbed knits photograph and read well in rooms where a flat cotton looks like nothing at all.
